PPE to Stay Dry and Warm Through Winter

Posted on 25/05/2021

Anyone who has spent time on a worksite throughout the winter months knows the importance of staying warm, especially when some or all of your shift is spent outdoors. It’s more than just a question of comfort; prolonged exposure to low temperatures can lead to cold stress, increasing the risk of injuries like cramps and strains.

In extreme circumstances, prolonged low body temperature can lead to frostbite, especially in the hands, fingers, and toes, and other serious conditions that can result in permanent tissue damage.

That’s why it is vital that all workers wear appropriate workwear, PPE and safety apparel whenever working in cold conditions. Wearing thick, thermal clothing in layers is a great way to achieve this, as covered in our previous blog. But it is equally important that clothing is water resistant to keep moisture out. Once the fibres of a piece of clothing become damp, it is impossible to stay warm. In this blog, we look at Westland’s range of water-resistant PPE and rainwear designed to protect you and your team from the elements.

Footwear

The toes and feet are highly susceptible to cold-related injuries. Trench foot, one of the more common foot injuries on winter worksites, is caused by exposure to cold and wet conditions. It can lead to pain and swelling, and can eventually damage the blood vessels, nerves, and other tissue.

Safety gumboots offer excellent protection against trench foot and frostbite. Our Muckboot Chore Safety Gumboot feature a heavy-duty rubber shell with a high density sole to keep moisture out. Lined with ultra-durable neoprene for heat insulation and comfort.

Gloves

The hands and fingers are another area of the body frequently affected by cold- and wet-related injuries, such as frostbite. Hands that are exposed to wet and cold conditions can develop chilblains, a painful inflammation in the blood vessels of the skin. Left untreated, chilblains can cause itching, swelling, and blistering of the skin.

Our PowerGrab Thermo Gloves keep workers’ hands dry with a layer of latex coating, and the 120-napped acrylic liner provides extra warmth. The ergonomic design means these gloves can be worn comfortably for long periods with reduced hand fatigue.

Leg Wear

In addition to safety gumboots or water-resistant work boots, water-resistant leg wear can keep workers’ legs and feet dry. Our Stamina Hi-Vis Overtrousers are made from 100% polyester to be highly water-proof. They feature an elasticised waistband and drawcord for comfort as well as press stud adjustment on the legs.

Raincoats and Jackets

A hooded waterproof jacket protects the torso, arms, and head. Our Stormforce Blue Winter Jacket uses a nylon outer shell to deflect rain and splashes and a fleece lining for warmth.

Our hugely popular, hi-vis Bison Extreme Tape Jackets are made with 100% polyester waterproof fabric, built to withstand the harshest outside conditions. Suitable for night and day use, this jacket is guaranteed to keep you dry for 12 hours.
